Yesterday in my Japanese Popular Media/Culture class

we watched a short documentary about Tezuka Osamu, who is widely regarded as the father of modern manga and anime. He created Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, Phoenix, and about 4908406 other things. He got really devoted to animation and was super into experimental shorts. I won’t go on and on about him really. To put it concisely: he was an amazing and talented man.

That’s not what I want to discuss.

In the short film there was a clip of one of his animations. It featured a young man falling in love with a girl pictured in an advertisement. He starts talking to her and she starts talking back. He asks her some standard question about herself (I forget what exactly, but it was something totally normal and expected when you’re trying to get to know someone), and she replies, “I don’t know. I’ve been a poster since I was born.”

Ive been a poster since I was born.
