i suggest clicking through to see the whole list. i would offer one comment about this post: there may be a plausible areal explanation for why japanese is the odd one out. all of these languages except hebrew and turkish are Indo-European languages, which are linked genetically and demonstrate a high amount of areal diffusion because of their geopolitical proximity. hebrew and turkish are also spoken in locations much closer to europe/north asia than japanese is, so it is not implausible to suggest that some kind of diffusion or larger (and more uncertain) genetic relationship is being brought to bear. it is worth keeping in mind as well that japanese does not rely on an alphabet to inscribe lexical items, which all of the other languages on the list do. the particular way that japanese writing relies on combinations of syllables and the fact syllables follow specific rules for vowel and consonant patterns and clusters, with which i am totally unfamiliar, may also prohibit creating “accurate” onomatopoeia from our linguistic perspective. i do know that japanese does not tolerate as many consonant clusters as the other languages on the list, and the bee sound relies exclusively on consonants.there might be something to that train of thought.

i may be totally off base on this, but these are my thoughts. any help, linguists? sunshineduk?

for the record: “nyan nyan” does not have to be repeated twice? “nyan” works just as fine and actually sounds very similar to “meow” and its variations when pronounced properly.

as for the bee one: i have never seen that onomatopoeia and cannot verify its accuracy but i think you have some good points, justin. you don’t find b and z next to each other in japanese. it isn’t done. you would need a vowel between them. of course there is “buzz.” but usually there would be a vowel after the z as well. also, there is no “uh” sound in japanese. the u sounds like “oo.” there is no sound in the japanese language which sounds like “buzz.”

so. there’s my two cents? although i don’t know if it’s helpful. after all i still have no idea why they use “boon boon” because that is so very different from what bees sound like anyway. all i can say is japanese has a TON of onomatopoeias. many of them have become actual words in the language. and not all of them are logical.

I have to say, one of my favourite things about the bbc Sherlock is this. Sherlock has been characterised as a ‘master of disguise’. Most versions of Sherlock take this in the most obvious sense (think RDJ’s Sherlock in the nearly indecipherable disguises).

But BBC Sherlock? He’s still a master of disguise even though he rarely changes any aspect of his outfit. The closest he came was the clerical collar and even that was the smallest of additions to his usual costume. BBC’s Sherlock is a master of disguise but not through any costume changes - it’s through body language.

And that really mirrors who he his. Every Sherlockian knows the line “No what I do is notice.” (and various paraphrases) and that’s what Sherlock uses - he knows what movements and expressions cause people to subconciously react in certain ways. BBC’s Sherlock is an elite master in disguise because he doesn’t need anything but himself.
